Apocaypse Hal - Quiz

The final Apocalypse Hal for 2013.

If you have trouble reading it - try the version on facebook, it should be bigger.

I'm taking a break for a while so you will have to wait patiently for Hal to return in 2014 (sorry mum). But rest assured, I have lots of ideas for 2014, some may even be good ones.

Have a very zombie christmas!

Well  it's that time of year when we find ourselves full of festive cheer, or festive fear if your Rick Grimes and have just been forced from your jail sanctuary into the zombie filled wilderness again!

This year why don't you put a bit of zombie into some of your christmas traditions! You have already seen Mr Rimsky's take on a gingerbread house, but have you thought about what kind of card to give a family member that last minute emergency gift of cash hastily stuffed into? Or what festive bedtime story do you have in store or the kids on Christmas Eve? Well lucky for you we have done the research so here is a few ideas to zombify your christmas.

Available here

Or last but not least how about adding a survival kit as decoration for your tree? If the outbreak occurs tomorrow you will have the jump on your preparations!!

On behalf of the BZF team a huge bloody zombie christmas to all our awesome followers out there, thanks for reading and supporting our blog. We will be taking a little break over the festive season ( well except maybe Mr Rimsky) but will be back next year with more zombie pop culture, art, survival tips and most importantly how to get through the apocalypse in style!!

Be merry and don't get bit!

A Christmas Carol

Christmas is almost here. So it's time to crank up the air conditioner, crack open a cold beer and sprawl out under the Christmas tree to read a good story.

And what better than Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Good old Ebenezer Scrooge who, through the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, discovers the true horror of a zombie infested London. That's right, zombies.

In 2011 Marvel comics released a 5 part adaption of this classic story with a ghoulish twist. London is being overrun by the "Hungry Death" a plague that is threatening to destroy the city and Christmas.

Filled with beautiful, flesh ripping illustrations, this is a story that really will teach the kids the true meaning of Christmas.

A late Halloween surprise!

Hi Everyone, a few weeks ago we were proud to share with you some of the spooky fun from our Halloween party.  A couple of you however were suitably disturbed by the creepy clown who we can now introduce as Mr D’Lush!
Mr D’Lush decided to freak us all out during our ‘Blair Witch’ confessions game with a graphic story that he had concocted on his own.  The story runs for about eight minutes but little did we know that the horror of the story was not all that he had in store for us.

So it is with BZF pride that we present to you the as yet untitled short graphic story below, if you have the nerves to sit through all the way to the end, we would love to hear your suggestions of a title on our Facebook page!

Beekeeping - a skill for apocalyptic life

So however your planning to keep out of the way of the hungry hordes when the zombie apocalypse goes down, whether it be keeping out of harm’s way by living amongst the roof tops, a remote farm, jail or barricading yourself your own little town Governor style, you best make sure there is room for some bee hives and get working on those bee keeping skills!

Why you ask... Well the answer is simple ...honey!! That's right my BZF friends, honey will be liquid gold in the dark apocalyptic times. Apart from the fact there is going to be no sugar for you tea, honey has a number of uses including many of those that will tick a lot of boxes for those not willing to give up on their beauty regime!

So here is how honey can help you make your way through the end of the world in style!

Acne – honey’s anti-bac properties make it a great cleanser for acne, so not only fight undead but use honey to fight off spots too.

Scars – you’re bound to pick up a scar here and there from a run in with other survivors so take advantage of honey’s natural bleaching effect to fade them away.

Moisturiser – run out of Nivea Crème and a raid has failed to find any left on the planet, well don’t stress, honey is soothing and hydrating so just wack on a honey mask and you won’t have to worry about dry flaky apocalyptic skin that could leaving you as dead looking as the zombies.

Hair conditioner and lightener – think you have to spend the rest of your post-apocalyptic life with bad hair and regrowth? Well think again! Honey is softening and moisturising for your hair too and the bleaching effect means that a weekly honey rinse wiill keep your locks shiny and your regrowth under control.
Hair removal – Just because you will be fighting for survival does not mean that you have to spend the rest of your days sporting long camo plants to cover your hairy legs, get the shorts out lady’s, get into your bathers even as honey can be used in place of wax!
So there you have it, I for one will be taking up beekeeping as soon as I have finished doing my hair!!
Slap on some honey and don't get bit!

Shuffling feet, groaning incoherently, eyes glazed over… an approaching zombie, hungry for fresh meat? Not quite. Just me, Miss Kohopop, before my morning coffee.

If you’re anything like me, the day doesn’t truly begin until you get your hands on a steaming hot soy flat white. There are countless studies proving how a little caffeine goes a long way; increased concentration, motivation and improved reaction time. All skills that could be put to good use in avoiding the walking dead.
This creates a problem for the post-apocalyptic zombie world. How do you get your caffeine fix when you’re holed up in a bunker with no electricity or running for your life? Never fear fellow coffee addicts, I have the solution!
A ‘phin’ is a small stainless-steel coffee filterthat sits neatly atop your glass. It has long used in Vietnam and famous for making delicious  phê sua , Vietnamese iced coffee. It’s cheap, durable, easy to use and will make a perfect Americano or Vietnamese iced coffeestrong and sweet. Just add some hot water and condensed milk (which will last a long time without spoiling) and let the drip do the rest. Best of all it’s portable - small enough to keep in your backpack without taking up precious spaceSo what are you waiting for? Find more information here

Zombie Stress Relief

Do you ever have those days when you feel like a zombie has bitten you to smithereens and the looming sense of dread suggests that you can’t go on??  Well if you have answered yes to this question (or no) then check out my cool support tools supplied by none other than our very own Miss Sugar and Spice!

Stress balls have never really been my thing, but hand me a rainbow brain shaped stress ball and I’m ready to squash those bad vibes into the apocalypse!  Some professionals recommend writing down how you feel into a personal diary, which is a much more pleasurable experience if you have an American ‘Zombie’ Gothic diary!!

If you’re going to be writing down your feelings and stuff, then you might need a pen, but wait, how about a pen with a tiny brain inside!!!  This little beauty is guaranteed to instantly make you feel better because let’s face it, no matter how stressed you are, it’s better than being encapsulated by a plastic cylinder and 10ml of water.

Finally, the choice of poison among many of my colleagues is a little known substance called coffee (Miss Sugar and Spice will be telling you more about this soon).  There is only one way to make your coffee experience second to none and that is with your very own Cheryl the Zombie mug – that chick really bites!!

I am aware this week’s post isn’t really pop culture related, but sometimes it’s nice to remind everyone to take a step back, relax a little and stop yourself from looking like one of the undead!

Apocalypse Hal - Zombie Apps

Yes I am the proud owner of a new smartphone. One day I'll work out how to use it.

The big question is, has smartphones already turned us into mindless shuffling zombies, just minus the rotting flesh. Seems that way whenever I visit the shopping centre.

Anyway there are lots of apps that could be useful, whether it is keeping your personal records on hand, drawing maps, compiling your looting list or even storing your favourite cocktail recipes.

BZF Book Club

I’m not sure about you guys but back in the day, science was never really my strong suit.  Biology class taught us the fascinating inner workings of the human body but I was too busy being obsessed with all things 90’s like techno music and a little Sandra Bullock movie called Speed.

It’s no surprise to anyone that our old friend the zombie has a keen interest in human biology and most of all consuming our fundamental organs!  So for all well-read zombies who are seeking a more in-depth look there is ‘A Zombie’s Guide to the Human Body (tasty tidbits from head to toe)’.

If you thought things were looking bad when major cities were over run and you forgot to make a zombie preparedness kit, well things just got a whole lot worse with the publication of this bloody book!  Why?  For starters ‘zombies’ will learn about fast food aka how muscles make humans run therefore knowing how best to take us down!

If zombies are peckish but can’t decide between a leg or a neck then they can learn about all the bones inside and which ones are the best to chew on mmmmmm.  I must say it is an exciting new way to look at biology through the rotting eyes of a hungry zombie, despite feeling somewhat vulnerable if a zombie knows about the benefits of munching on my Pyloric Sphincter!

Informative, engaging and disgusting, this book gives the younger reader in all of us an entertaining perspective on Biology and really gets into the guts of it all!

Apocalypse Hal - Bug out boats

Everyone talks about heading to the hills or climbing into their bunker if the apocalypse happens. I say, go cruising!

I have always been interested in the history of early submarine development. A time of wild ideas, visionaries, and many fatalities. This week is inspired by the plywood (yes plywood) semi-submersible the CIA developed in the 1950s.

Zombie STIs?

Recently, Mr Rimsky highlighted the importance of personal hygiene during tough times.  I’m going to take that idea one step further and raise all the questions that most folk are probably too shy to ask, like what about intimacy?  Salt n Peppa famously sang ‘Let’s talk about sex’ and the comedy classic Mean Girls taught the world that if you’re a teenager and you have sex, then you will get chlamydia and die!

Seriously though, the whole safe sex idea in the apocalypse may be in jeopardy, take The Walking Dead for example, Rick found himself a dad for the second time round and the baby ended up with the nickname ‘Ass Kicker’!

Thankfully, Hollywood has expressed concern for this issue and has released a trailer for the upcoming zombie flick ‘Contracted’.  Now before you get too excited, this film appears to take place prior to the apocalypse and may actually focus on patient zero, sadly for her she has symptoms which appear to be more lethal than just your average case of herpes or chlamydia.

Intrigued?  Check out the trailer below!
Until such time that we get to see the full film, Mr Vitamin G advises you to proceed with caution and of course protection!

The frockalypse!

Well frocks seem to have been under represented on the blog of late with Mr Vitamin G and Mr Rimsky pumping out such killer content but with Melbourne cup being run here yesterday its time to talk frocks. The catch phrase for the day is the race that stops the nation, and it really does but as much as its about horses its also about frocks! Yes the Melbourne cup is the day that the ladies get seriously frocked up to the nines, I am talking designer outfits, hats, fascinators and some seriously impractical shoes!

This got me thinking.... What if cup day was the day the zombie virus came to town and the race track was ground zero!! With all those well dressed ladies in tight restrictive dresses, colour blocking, wispy hats that can sometimes impair vision and high heels that keep sinking into the grass, a getaway from a hungry zombie would be near impossible!! Surely they would be the first to go and turn the into fashionable undead!! It would be the frockalypse!

Myself and Miss Sugar and Spice took advantage of the day to get our frock on, but to be on the safe side of any impending doom we did in the safety of a secure building for our Melbourne cup work event, also to be noted we wore sensible shoes( well kind of).

Get your frock on and don't get bit

Canberra Zombie Walk 2013

I think it is safe to say that Canberra's zombie walk 2013 was a success. A wide range of zombies turned up, from a zombie ballet dancer to an infected child in PJs clutching her teddy bear.

The infected horde starts it's journey into the city.

Zombies from all walks of life turned up. Note the rat vomiting blood on this council road worker's hard hat.

 Did she eat the groom?

It was good to see the younger generations get involved.

 Zombie love is eternal.

Even the Pope turned up for the occasion.

Of course some people don't believe in zombies and tried very hard to ignore the whole thing.

While I was unable to attend as a zombie, I can see now that some serious costume design will be needed if I attend next year.

Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year, you get to dress up in great costumes, watch some scary movies and pig out on truckloads of candy.

Having just moved into my new place this year, I thought it was a great opportunity to hold a Halloween party with a twist.  Each room was set up with a different theme and the guests had a set of directions to follow when they arrived.  Mr N and I decided to include ourselves in the ‘experience’ and hide in strategic places to deliver the best scares.
Once our guests had all been through the house we sat down to a short zombie film from VHS 2, followed by some horror movie trivia which resulted in the highest and lowest scoring players having to complete some gory tasks.  The first was the retrieval of some severed body parts in the red jelly bath and the other was to visit the ‘Pet Semmetary’ to dig up poor old Church – who was surprisingly stuffed with candy!  We also decided to have a Blair Witch moment and offer the chance for everyone to tell their very own real life scary story and then watched them back all together.
Lucky for our BZF fans, you guys get to see this all first-hand!  That’s right, much of the evening was caught on film and you can check out our Halloween party below!

The BZF team wish you a super scary Halloween and hope you all have as much fun as we did!

What Zombies taste like...

In general, zombies spend most of their time chomping on the living, but last week I sank my teeth into a sweet juicy Zombie Chew!!  A BZF fan, Miss E was thanking me for some assistance I had provided with her computer, in return she presented to me my new favourite food group:

How I didn’t know about this scrumptious treat weighed heavily on my heart, but I moved on quickly and consumed my very first Zombie Chew in a very enthusiastic manner.  Let me offer a warning straight up, these babies are CHEWY, so if you have braces or any form of dentures you might want to approach with caution.
Having eaten my first Zombie Chew within around 4 minutes, I felt as though I had ingested a Teletubbie covered in icing sugar wrapped in Honey Boo Boo.  I also began to notice some interesting symptoms which included a fuzzy tongue, an uncontrollable urge to act like a hyperactive 4 year old and the need to drink copious amounts of water.
It did cross my mind for a split second that the Zombie Chew might  be the product of a brilliant masterminds plan to fast track the apocalypse via delicious candies with unpronounceable ingredients, but then I fell sharply into a sugar coma and came to the conclusion that the only thing to improve my sunken state was to have more!!!

Please consume responsibly.

Apologises to all my adoring fans being a bit late with this week's post (Sorry mum it has been a busy week).

Anyway, as Halloween is just around the corner why get the kids doing some fun crafting.

Using washes for shadows and dry brush for highlights is a great technique for creating textures on items. I use it all the time on my projects. Here is the necklace I whipped up for the Halloween party using the technique. Was going for that diseased look.

The Walking Dead is back!

The Walking Dead Season 4 has landed and I am more excited than a naked Miley on a wrecking ball!!
I have to say season 3 was a bit of a mixed bag for me, there were moments of greatness and then moments of meh.  I have tried my hardest not to read up too much on the upcoming season, however I have read that they are upping the action with more twists and turns to give the show a bit of a boost – Yay!
I do however have many questions that I hope are answered in season 4 like, will Carl finally get a haircut?  Is Beth going to continue singing at people to make them feel better?  Or will Daryl get his shirt off and tell Carol how he really feels?!?  Despite these pressing questions, the BZF crew will wait until the second episode has aired so we can watch them back to back – one episode is just never enough!!
Such is the excitement for season 4 of the Walking Dead, that some of our BZF readers have sent in bits and pieces that we really had to share.  A big shout out to Mr L all the way from Versailles France, who sent through a hilarious Walking Dead parody called The Walking Dumb (Ways To Die) – it was posted on Youtube at the end of last year and you have to watch all the way to the end just for the jazz hands!

This week (13 - 19 October) is Carer's Week in Australia. This of course raises the question - "So how you care for a zombie?"

Smart Zombies!

Zombies have a well-known reputation for being mindless people eating machines and for being somewhat brainless, yet in popular fiction they are able to over throw governments, law enforcement and common society.

Do you have the goods to survive the zombie apocalypse?  Do you have the skills to make it through the outbreak and avoid the panic?  I’m not talking about a medical kit and a few cans of soup, rather the mental preparedness to keep it all together and save not only your life but your loved ones too.
If you have answered no to any of the questions above (don’t feel bad, I only just found out Teal was a colour) help is on the way thanks to the University of California!  Confused?  How would you like to take a course in Society, Science, Survival:  Lessons from AMC’s The Walking Dead – if your heart stopped for a second, I kid you not, this is the real deal.
The course aims to help you understand basic social identities, the spread of disease, how to protect yourself all while using The Walking Dead as a basis for the zombie apocalypse.  Who ever thought that a university course would be the best place to start when arming yourself for the worst, but didn’t someone say that ‘knowledge is power’.
Even better, the cost of enrolment is free and it runs from October 14 to December 20, so if your interested in achieving an A+ for your apocalypse survival, then you better be quick!  To find out more information, check out the University of California’s website.

Zombie Abs

When I told my mum that I was going to start writing for an online blog, she made me promise that I would keep my manners and my dignity.  Sadly the second part of my promise has been partially broken.

This week I’m bringing the boys out there some hot zombie fashion with an unexpected twist.  Mr Rimsky alerted me to the fact that one of our local retailers has released a line of zombie themed T-Shirts, so off I went on a little shopping expedition!
Mrs K has always done a great job bringing the girls important post-apocalyptic fashion tips and I thought this was a great opportunity to give the guys a turn, especially with The Walking Dead season 4 beginning in approximately 2 weeks!

Yes, as you can see I am wetting myself with excitement about Season 4 of The Walking Dead and yes I will be wearing this T-Shirt on premiere night (Miss Sugar & Spice, are we doing takeaway Pizza or Thai?)

So on first viewing this T-Shirt appears to have a simple humorous tag, but wait, there’s more!

Sorry mum for the excess skin, I’ll try to keep that to a minimum in future, oh and I’m doing my Tap Out XT training, so those zombie abs are hopefully on their way!

I love that guys fashion is getting a bit more playful and when zombies are involved I’m pretty much there!  As we roll into October, Halloween seems only a stone’s throw away, so boys you have no excuse not to look your best!

Mmmmmmm Zombies?

I know the words sweet, delicious and decadent are not usually associated with the common zombie.  However, if you are lucky enough to be situated near Spokane Washington USA then it’s a different story all together!  I know every second man and his Chihuahua is saying that zombies have reached a total saturation point and to this I say nay, let the crusty zombie continue its journey into the pages of history or should that be into our stomachs??
BZF fans, it is with jealous taste buds that I present to you the most awesome idea for a takeaway joint in a long time – Dawn of the Donut!  No I’m not kidding, and yes I am salivating profusely, there is actually a zombie themed donut takeaway shop and I for one am very excited!

So I have gone through the menu with very hungry eyes and I have picked out two of the donuts I would most like to try!  Why only two you ask?  If I were to review them all, I would most likely be on a plane tomorrow with seven pairs of stretchy pants, one for each day of the week.

Brains!  Believe it or not this is an apple fritter with raspberry icing, genius I know and why isn’t there one in my house for dessert!

Coco Apocalypse – Anyone who knows me is well aware that I will eat almost anything that has chocolate on it. This is no exception and I would be happy for this to be my final meal should the worst come true.

I encourage you all to check out the Dawn of the Donut website for more beatifully grotesque tasty treats which any starved zombie would happily sink their teeth into.  Such is the popularity of Dawn of the Donut, their local news program reported on the growing success of this culinary phenomenon, check it out here.

Zombies on Parade

Under normal circumstances, if you were to see a horde of zombies coming your way, I would strongly advise you to run in the opposite direction. There is however one instance where a zombie horde is to be applauded and viewed up close and personal!  This week, BZF wants you to feel the zombie love and spare your fake blood, latex skin and hopefully a few dollars for a very worthy cause.

Over the last few years here in Australia, zombie walks have started to gain in popularity as the undead take over the main streets of capital cities and stumble along their merry way while citizens look on in pure horror or pure delight.   To gain momentum and approval in the mainstream, zombie walks have become a great fundraising vehicle for some highly respected charities.

The 2013 Zombie Walk (happening across the country from June to November) will see all proceeds going towards the Brain Foundation, which really couldn’t be more appropriate for a bunch of hungry zombies.  The Brain Foundation do wonderful work in the areas of brain research, disease and injury, so it is definitely worth your time to get involved and march with pride.

Mrs K knows all too well that I like to get my zombie on whenever I can (because I’m worth it) and I am happy to use any excuse possible to transform myself into a ghastly creature of the night and no I am not referring to last weekend! Seriously though, the team here at BZF are super excited about getting a group of friends together to let out our inner zombie while supporting the Brain Foundation.  Our home city event is in November and you can best believe that I will be posting a follow up article with all the zombie goss and plenty of putrid pics!
